Yes, it's been another long break due to illness, but I got out on Sunday for a long slow training run (a bit over 18km) and for a zombie run today.  Today was nice - the sun was out, the running was reasonably easy, the story was exciting.

The half-marathon I'm signed up for is in 11 days and I'm mostly confident I'll complete, so long as a) I don't get ill again b) I can get in two more short runs this week and two next week.

The one annoyance is the distance tracking is still not working quite right, but I think it's down to the phone taking a bit of time to sort out its GPS location.  It did something similar in RunKeeper on Sunday, and I had to wait a couple of minutes for the phone to say "ok yeah, know where I am now".  So now I think I'll switch on Zombies Run (which triggers the GPS) while I'm still getting changed, in hopes it can find itself a bit sooner.

Wow, that was basically awful. I skipped a planned run last week because I was just overwhelmed by urgent work stuff, something I try not to do. And then today was one of those inexplicably bad runs, everything was a struggle, I could barely force myself to keep going for 10 minutes at 7.5 kph, dropped to 6.5 kph but didn't really recover, so I took a walking break after a further 10 minutes. That gave me a rather pathetic time of 3.4 km in 30 minutes. I'm proud of myself for doing what I could manage rather than giving up or attempting something that was beyond me, but still, bleh.

Only one more episode of the original series of the zombies; this one ended on a total cliffhanger!

Life got in the way of running since Wednesday, but I managed to drag myself to the gym at lunchtime. 17½ minutes continuously at 7.5 kph, then 5 minutes at 6.5 kph to recover, then finished at 7.5 kph fairly comfortably. Still 3.6 km in 30 minutes. This one felt neither good nor bad, just doggedly keeping going at the fast pace. The zombie episode was short (well under 20 minutes) but dramatic, we're getting to the climax.

I haven't run in over a fortnight due to illness (cold, migraine, more cold) but today I finally felt well enough and got out for a slow run.  Only four episodes left of this season!   Unsurprisingly my pace was well down, approximately 8 min/km rather than the 7:30 I'd been getting used to, but the main thing to me was to actually get out and run and remember how much I like it.

For the past few weeks I have been wrangling a new Android phone alongside my old iphone.  Today was my first proper run of Zombies, Run on the new phone, getting the app and music and an interval timer behaving together nicely, so I'm glad that worked.   Unfortunately the GPS mapping was pretty rubbish and this is apparently a known issue.  Sigh.

I can't believe I'm almost at the end of the story! I'm really glad I've got S2 to look forward to, because I would miss having my zombie story while I run.

Today I managed 15 minutes continuously at 7.5 kph, which is just about the best I've ever done, but the second half of my run was scrappy, I only managed a few short sections at pace with several 6.5 kph breaks. I think I'm honestly getting near the limit of what I can do at the moment, it takes a good day for me to improve on a previous time. Still 3.6 km in 30 minutes.

Well, that was emotional! Gradually building up my continuous 7.5 kph time; this time I managed 12½ minutes at pace, then 5 minutes at 6.5 kph, then 7½ minutes at pace, and inserted another short 6.5 kph recovery section before finishing the final 2½ minutes at pace. Felt like hard work, I had to really push myself to keep going. Anyway still 3.6 km in 30 minutes.

I dropped in to the sports shop to get some new leggings; they didn't have anything bigger than a 16, which is a bit tight on me but I reckoned that slightly too small leggings would be less uncomfortable than well-fitting but ripped leggings.

I extended my fast (7.5 kph) sections from 1 km to 10 minutes, with 5 minute breaks at 6.5 kph. And that was doable, so I feel I'm in sight of doing the whole thing at 7.5 kph within a couple of weeks. 3.6 km total in 30 minutes.

Had a really awful cold the second half of last week; I was actually ill, not just making excuses not to run. Weekend I was away and didn't manage to fit a run in, though I did walk about 5 miles each day so that still counts as exercise.

Today I ran at lunchtime, increasing from 5 min intervals at my 7.5 kph goal pace to 1 km intervals, ie 8 minutes at this pace. This was manageable if hard work; I definitely needed those jogging breaks, which I'm taking at 6.5 kph currently. The biggest limiting factor was the discomfort of running in torn leggings, really need to get round to replacing them. Total distance 3.6 km, giving me a overall pace of 8'20'' /km, which is starting to look respectable again.

Got caught up with various stuff and didn't manage to leave the house until it was almost too late to get to the gym before closing. But I made it, and I had a reasonably good run. I tried alternating 5 minutes at 7.5 kph with 5 minutes at 6.5 kph, and found that doable. I wasn't sure if 5 minutes of slow running would be enough recovery time to pick up the pace again, but this rhythm worked pretty well. 3.5 km total since this is slower on average than a continuous 7.2 kph.

Today's Zombies mission threw me a bit because it felt like it was out of order somehow. Partly because I was expecting to talk about the viral sample I found in day 15, and it wasn't mentioned. Anyway, definitely thrilling once I stopped worrying about how it connects to the sequence.

I missed the only slot I had available to run in the second half of the week because I had a panic morning and forgot my leggings. This morning I found it really hard to drag myself out to the gym; I think weekends can be a problem that way because there isn't a set time when I have to go running so it's easy to procrastinate. But I made it in the end and I'm pleased I did because I had a good run.

I managed to keep going at 7.2 kph for the whole 30 minutes, hard work but never seriously uncomfortable. So 3.6 km overall, and I feel good in an endorphins sort of way, as well as feeling psychologically good that I'm making steady progress again.

Annoyingly, though, my leggings split right down the inseam. (This always happens to me, and having thigh muscles isn't making it any better.) So I'm going to have to get some new leggings, partly because the gym won't let me run in normal clothes, and partly because the torn leggings are no longer able to keep my thighs from chafing. This on top of needing to get new glasses as I managed to snap my main pair in a fashion unrelated to exercise. With teaching starting on Monday it's a hassle I could do without.

I did a long slow 12k on Sunday: an entirely new route, round through Girton and Histon, using some of the busway.  It was like my previous long runs: well within my limits and quite pleasant, though I was definitely ready to stop at the end and pretty tired afterward.  I found that Monday I was still quite physically tired but also suffused with an unusually strong feeling of relaxed contentment throughout the day.

I couldn't run yesterday lunchtime because of a work thing, but got out today and did just over 30 minutes at 7:30.

The new voices are definitely Apple voices, as explained by this blog update. Unfortunately so is the app crashing at the end of the mission, but before I raised another bug I checked the twitter account and found that a new update had been released to fix the crashing.  So I've got that downloaded ahead of my next run.

Two quite similar treadmill runs on Friday and today, just managing to squeeze three runs into the week even with being away at the weekend. Both days I did 3.5 km in 30 minutes, mostly at 7.2 kph with a 6.5 kph jogging break in the middle. Friday was 15 minutes at 7.2 kph then 10 mins break and finishing at the faster pace again. Today I managed a whole 20 minutes at 7.2 kph continuously, and picked up to 7.2 kph again for the last five minutes after only a 5 minute slow jog. So a definite improvement even if I didn't actually run measurably further.

For both runs my legs felt like jelly by the end. Lungs-wise it was just on the edge of what I could cope with. On Friday I really did have to take a break half-way through, and I needed most of 10 minutes at the slow pace to feel recovered enough to speed up again. Today definitely felt more manageable, to the point where I'm not sure if I should have tried to push on past the 20 minutes at the faster pace. But I think I'm getting to the point where both my lungs and my muscles are limiting me, so I feel better about building up gradually.

Back to more action-adventure, and another new character.  I was slightly distracted because I thought the voice was the same as one of the characters in the The Walk Game, but I've also been admiring how well each of a growing cast of characters in both apps are distinguished, when all you hear is their voices in "conversation".

After a series of ~25min missions, this one took nearly 36 minutes.  I'd managed to get nearly home again after 30 minutes so I had to improvise an extra bit of route on the fly.   I was really pleased to find that even with this extra distance I got my fastest ZR pace yet, 7:17 min/km.

The app did something strange as soon as the mission was complete; instead of going into another song it made a squawk and then appeared to have crashed by the time I fished the phone out of my bumbag.   At least when I restarted it, the mission was marked complete and all the data seems to be uploaded ok, so I'm not too fussed.  The "robot voice" giving me time updates has changed and is much clearer and vaguely familiar - Tony wondered if it was the Siri voice but I don't know that enough to be sure.

This was a very light-hearted episode after several more action-angsty ones, which was a nice change of tone.  I did it with 2 min:1 min run:walk intervals for a bit over 30 minutes and again averaged around 7:30 min/km .

If my magic mile time is to be believed, I ought to be able to run this kind of distance considerably faster, but I'm not quite ready to try that yet.  At the moment I finish "comfortably hot and tired" rather than gasping and exhausted - and I do need to knock out a decent half-day's work after the end of my lunchtime so I can't go completely all-out.  I'm thinking that I should stick to the current run:walk ratio for the next few zombie runs and maybe review again at the end of next week.

Today's lunchtime run was well-timed to give me a break from a day of solid marking. It was realistically a bit cold for me to run outside, but I didn't at all feel like going to the gym, so I tried it anyway. I could tell from the warmup that my lungs weren't doing too well, so I switched off the zombie chases and just took it gently. Actually it got a lot more comfortable about half-way in, which probably does suggest being fully warmed up made the difference, but still, I didn't really want to push myself.

Short zombies episode, pretty much just an infodump of the origins of the zombie apocalypse :-) I clocked 25 minutes at "Mission Complete" and decided to run for one more song, but as luck would have it it was the longest song in my playlist. So my final numbers were 3.3 km in 32 minutes. Slow, but I did get myself out and completed a run, and I did keep going for the full 30 minutes (plus a bit).

I did this Thursday lunchtime, with walking breaks, without zombie chases, and turning round at about 16 minutes to achieve a total of 30 minutes running and about three minutes walking at the end to cool down.   My pace was again around 7:30 min/km which was satisfying.

I'm now working full time which means I could theoretically run more often.  I certainly feel the pull of wanting to get through Zombies Run more quickly, but I also don't want to overtrain.  I'm going to compromise by trying to build a habit of going for a walk in my non-running lunch hours.  Once that habit is settled, and if running is still going well, I could think about "upgrading" a lunchtime walk to a gentle lunchtime run.

This seemed to finish quite early (around 24 minutes) but then the radio mode picked the Orbital's Dr Who which took me nicely to the end of my 30 minute run.

I've been frustrated by being stuck in an apparent rut of zombie runs all at 8 min/km and never getting faster (I have gone faster on some in the past, which is extra-annoying).  So I decided to try Galloway walking breaks of 2min:1min, corresponding to a target pace of  approx 7.5 min/km. Then I forgot to turn the zombie chases off when starting the session, and found it very hard to ignore the two that took place (I went faster for one, but had no capacity to for the second).

I certainly felt that I was pushing myself harder on the running sections than when running continuously, and was pleased to find at the end that I had averaged a pace of 7:31 min/km, almost exactly my notional target and my fastest zombie run yet.  I'm not sure I could have kept that pace up for much longer, but it was satisfying for a 30 minute run.  I'm going to keep up the walking breaks for my next few zombie runs (but with the chases turned off!) and see if they continue to go well.

I feel very proud of myself for managing to drag myself out for a run on Christmas eve – I'm not going to manage three runs this week but at least one was better than using the festive season as an excuse to break my routine. [personal profile] jack came with me and we ran along the river to Fen Ditton and back in a small loop. Some of it is paved track, some was across fields, and there was a headwind for much of the way back. I was also being gentle with myself because it's on the edge of too cold to be safe for my lungs. I paused the timer when we actually had to go round a huge waterlogged mudbath and through a hedge, but a few times I was slowed by dealing with smaller amounts of mud than that. So overall quite a bit slower than what I've been managing on the treadmill, 2.8 km in 27 minutes, but I think reasonably good going considering.

It was interesting doing the zombie chases in the real world. The first one I set off way too fast and couldn't keep going for the full minute, but the second one I actually won even though it was right at the end of the run and I was pretty tired. The story for Mission 11 was one of the most emotive yet, really getting in to this!

Still no accelerometer so no zombie chases, but at least I could hear the dialogue this time. This was one of the best runs I've managed for ages, not that the numbers were super-brilliant but still an improvement.

I ran for 10 minutes at 7.2 kph, and felt I was struggling for breath, so I slowed down to 6.5 kph for 5 minutes, and then actually managed to complete the remaining 15 minutes at a steady pace of 7.2 kph. I think the second chunk was easier partly for psychological reasons, telling myself that I just need to keep going for 5 minutes is very different from facing the prospect of another 20 minutes of this when I'm struggling already. But I think it was also better physically, I was warmed up and got into a good rhythm with deep, regular breathing.

That came out at 3.5 km total, so the same average as when I ran the whole thing at 7 kph. But I feel good about incrementing my speed and still coping, and taking a break by running slower rather than giving up.

I have no idea whether I'm going to be able to keep up with running over the Xmas break; may be tricky if, as is likely, it's too cold to run outside, since I'm not a member of a gym in Cambridge. But I'll see if I can improvise something.

I bought a bumbag big enough to carry my oversized phone in order to play with the zombies without getting into trouble at the gym. I was hoping that I could manage putting the headphones in, starting the episode and getting the phone into the pouch towards the end of the warmup, but that ended up being a bit faffy. I'm sure I'll get used to it after a couple of tries.

The accelerometer options are hand, armband and pocket; I tried pocket as that seemed the closest to having the phone on my hip in a bumbag, but it turned out that the phone was completely unable to detect my stride at all in this setup. I think this is partly because the whole point of wearing a phone like that is that the waist is fairly minimally in motion while running. So I didn't get any zombie chases, but completed thirty minutes at a steady 7 kph, making 3.5 km in an arithmetically obvious way.

Physically, I found the run... neutral. It wasn't enjoyable, but it wasn't painful or horrible either, it was just this mildly unpleasant chore that I had to carry on for what felt like a long 30 minutes without the zombie chases to break it up. Mission 9 was really emotive; I continue to be very impressed with the quality of the writing! It's also really long, more than 50% longer than several of the earlier missions. I stopped after my planned 30 minutes and listened to the rest of the transmissions as I was getting changed, but the sudden jump from under 25 minutes to over 35 is a bit disconcerting.
