In order to build up to running for 30 minutes at 7.5 kph, which is my next big milestone, I'm alternating between 7.5 kph and 7 kph. Last week I did 5 minutes each, and it was hard but I made it. Today I tried 7.5 minutes at pace followed by 5 mins running slower, but still running and quite a bit above my slowest pace. I managed the first two faster intervals, then really couldn't do the final 5 minutes at 7.5 kph and in fact I had to slow right down to be able to complete at all.

The main reason I didn't quite manage what I aimed for today was that I had a horrible, really painful stitch for most of the last 10 minutes. I'm proud of myself for keeping going through that, while also being sensible enough to pay attention to my actual body rather than the numbers I'm trying to beat.

I don't know quite what made it so hard. If I can recover in 5 minutes at 7 kph at all, I ought to be able to recover from the longer intervals just as well as the shorter ones. But then it wasn't my heart and lungs that were limiting me this time. I have had a pretty stressful day, and I'm a bit short of sleep, and I hadn't eaten for a while, so those probably all made things harder. I can normally get away with running before lunch, but maybe trying for more effort than I ever have before needs a bit more fuel.

Anyway, with all that I still managed 4.1 km in 35 minutes including the warm-up. I think I'll try for the same run again next week, I don't think it's completely beyond my ability to do two lots of 7.5 mins and one 5 minute run at 7.5 kph.
