30 mins: 3.5 km
Dec. 11th, 2013 08:21 pmThe good news is that I completed my whole run at a steady pace of 7 kph, which I haven't been able to manage since I came back from a break over the summer and then picked up a really dragging cold (which I still kind of have, to be honest).
The bad news is that the annoying gym staff bod banned me from holding my phone in my hand to use Zombies, Run! in accelerometer mode. He came over and told me it's not allowed to talk on the phone while on the treadmill, and I said I wasn't talking, I was just listening to a podcast (I had brought the phone to my ear to be able to hear the story section over the gym background noise). He told me I should just put the phone on the lectern and not hold it. I explained that it was a program to help me with running, and that I had to hold it for the accelerometer to work. He clearly didn't believe me that phones could do that, and I think wanted to save face, so he told me it was still forbidden :-(
I like a lot of things about the council gym, including its cheap membership. But this isn't the first time the staff have imposed more or less arbitrary rules on me; at one point it was suddenly not allowed to run in a skirt even though I'd been doing so quite happily and safely for months. I'm glad that at least happened when I was committed enough to running to go out and buy leggings, but still, really annoying. I think in this case I'm going to have to go out and buy an old-fashioned bumbag or perhaps a small shoulder bag. Running without my zombies is way too boring to keep up.
After all that, I did 9 minutes mostly at 7 kph with one successful zombie chase at 8.4 kph near the beginning. Then about a two-minute break for arguing with the trainer, long enough that I wasn't really breathing hard by the time I started again. Then 21 minutes at a steady 7 kph, which was a grind but not unmanageable. 3.5 km total.

Date: 12/12/2013 10:39 am (UTC)For the phone, the problem is that I foolishly went and bought a Galaxy Note. I love it to bits but the one thing it isn't good for is as an exercise aid. It's too physically big for arm-holsters, pockets or my fancy shmancy runners' belt. So I think the solution is a more traditional bumbag if I can find one, or possibly a small satchel or shoulderbag where I can adjust the strap length so that the phone sits exactly on my hip and doesn't bounce around. Or maybe one of those very small, light backpacks, though I don't like running with a bag on my back, even a little weight on my shoulders seems to change my posture enough that I can't breathe very well.
