The sun came out from the clouds briefly, and I thought I'd be virtuous and take the opportunity to go out for today's run, and save having to go to the gym. As I probably should have predicted given the general weather situation, the clouds closed in again and it started raining heavily just about as soon as I'd got to the point of my loop furthest away from home. I decided to keep going anyway, because I was going to get nearly as wet if I turned round and went home.

Totally awful run. It hurt to breathe, I ran for 10 minutes and then took a break, then just about dragged myself through a second 10 minutes slower than walking pace but nominally jogging. Even trying to follow my strategy of slowing down rather than giving up, I couldn't manage more than 20 minutes, and if I'm honest that pretty much triggered a mild asthma episode.

I don't know if it was the fact that the rain and wind were making me too cold to be able to run sensibly, or if this endless cold is still irritating my lungs, or if it was just bad luck. I'm just really frustrated at the moment. I couldn't run in August or September due to travel and then respiratory illness, and when I started again at the beginning of the month, I felt optimistic that I'd lost a little bit of fitness but I would soon recover. But no, I feel as if I've been getting steadily worse throughout October, started out being able to run 3.5 km in 30 minutes, later just barely managed 3.2 or less, and today I couldn't even complete the gentlest 30 minute run. Today may be a one-off and not part of a trend, of course, but still.

It may be that the answer is that I have to resign myself to running in the gym over the winter months, but I do find it much harder to motivate myself to do that than to go for a jog round the park. Anyway, I'll see if next time is any better.

How utterly frustrating. It does sound more like you are sensitive to the cold than getting less fit though. Good luck for next time.
