Tried increasing the speed of my intervals to 8 kph today. That was pretty successful; I ran two lots of 1 km at that speed, with 5 mins' walking in between. The third interval I only made it to 750m but that's still pretty good overall, given I've never tried 8 kph before. The total time was 42'48'' for 5 km, which is a bit slower than I managed last week because I was spending considerably less of the time running at the faster pace. But it's still a meaningful improvement.
Body-wise, it was hard on my lungs; I felt as if I were on the edge of triggering asthma spasms at one point. And I was still panting a bit by the ends of the 5 minute recovery intervals. But knowing I can run at 8 kph at all, I have plenty of room to work on improving the proportion of the time I'm moving at that speed.
