Day 2 was Friday: my plan to run Wednesday scuppered by the below-freezing temperatures. Thursday was also cold but is also the toughest day logistically. But Friday we had family arriving in the evening and Tony had taken a day off to help prepare, so I took advantage and ran directly after the school run, trying out a new route starting outside the school. The 2 x 10 min went well and I enjoyed it; the exciting highlight was literally running into a bicycle coming out of an alley. I mostly caught the bike and neither it nor the rider hit the ground badly, and we spent about 30s apologising to each other and checking we were both in working order before mutually agreeing to go on. I could feel I would have bruises (and they are quite obvious now) but they eased up in the warmth of running.
The total distance was only a fraction more than Monday's 5/8/5 but I think the crash had something to do with that.
Day 3 was going to be Sunday but I overslept hugely after late-night celebrating with the family, and last night was too cold after work, but tonight was more temperate. It was a straight 25 minutes, so a chunk longer than the 20 minutes I did at the end of week 5, but after that triumph I wasn't very worried about finishing. I ran my usual route and had to add extra on at the end as I'm covering much more distance now than in the days of weeks 2 & 3. In total I covered 3.7k, so still a long way to the promised land of 5k, but I am solidly enjoying the running itself now. The transition to cool-down made me suddenly aware of quite sore calf muscles, so I took extra time stretching them out this time.
Next "week" is 3 more days of running the same as today, so I suppose the goal is to consolidate the confidence built so far. I'm unlikely to get out on Thursday, but Friday should be possible. Time to change my route again, but this time be more careful of alleyways!

Date: 18/12/2012 10:40 pm (UTC)I was definitely pretty tempted to skip straight from the end of Week 6 to 30 minutes; the difference between 25 minutes and 30 minutes isn't huge, and it felt a bit frustrating to increment as gradually as the programme suggests. But I did make perceptible improvements by running for 25 minutes three times, then 28 minutes three times, and then 30 minutes three times, so I guess it does work.
